THE STAR: MARÍA JOSÉ GÓMEZ

Hello! I am María José Gómez and this week I have been the Star of my group with my colleague Carmen González.

I loved this work, the topic that we chose for our work this week is very interesting and entertaining, it is about "Greek mythology". I enjoyed doing the show, I must say that I was very nervous at first but that is normal, once I started the nerves were removed and both, my partner and I enjoyed a lot while we explained to all the class about Greek gods and the myth of Hades and Persephone.

Certainly, my experience as Star has been fantastic and I hope that the next time this experience can be equal or better than this one.

Working as star

Hi bloggers! I'm Carmen and I've been one of the stars during this week

THE JOURNALISTS : ROSA AND CRISTINA.F.

Hey! We are Rosa and Cristina.F. and this week we have been the journalists of Hide and Seek. It’s amazing because we feel like real journalists of a magazine or a newspaper and we both work well together!! :D

February, Wednesday 19th

We went to Luis Vives and started watching some videos and other resources of LMS to understand how to do our next presentation. When we read a lot of information we were ready to start. But we had to decide how we would create our project and what topic we would use. Finally we decided that we would talk about mythology. We selected the  information to make our draft to show it to the teacher. We divided our work. Even we divided the work, we talked a little bit about it together.

February, Thursday 20th

These evening, after the clarifications of our teacher about what to improve of our tasks, we met on “Luis Vives” to continue working. We chose Greek Mythology, concretely the myth of “The Rape of Persephone” where the ancient Greeks explained the seasons. While some of us were working on it, others were working on Creative Common License and How to do a good presentation. The last ones informed to the rest of the group about what they learned, in order to make a fine Slideshow for our exposition.

February, Monday 24th

We did the expositions of the week. After choosing the order of the presentations, we started with them; our group was the 5th. While we were watching them, we graded them according to what we have learned about doing good presentations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6s3WKGzZk0&feature=youtu.be

Finally, we have to say one more thing: while we were uploading our presentation video we found an interesting video called "Remix Creative Common Videos". It's really surprising because it make us realize that there are a lot of things around us that we don't know.

Rosa and Cristina.F.

This week the translator is... the fantastic Almudena :)

Hello bloggers! I am Almudena and this week I have been the translator of my group. I’m going to highlight some words that I think that they are very important.
This week we have learnt about how we can make a good presentation for our audience and we have known a lot of different web where we can use images without copyright.

These are the words:

1. Slides Share: Slides Share is a company that have got a unique  goal: To share knowledge online. SlideShare has grown to become the world’s largest community for sharing presentations and other professional content.
Slide Share is a important tool for us because we can find topics ranging from technology and business to travel, health, and education. We can share the content that matters to us with our colleagues, customers, friends and followers. With this tool our future projects can reach a wide audience.

2. Copyright: is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution, usually for a limited time, with the intention of enabling the creator of intellectual wealth (e.g. the photographer of a photograph or the author of a book) to receive compensation for their work and be able to financially support themselves.

3. Presentations: A presentation is a means of communication which can be adapted to various speaking situations, such as talking to a group, addressing a meeting or briefing a team.
To be effective, step-by-step preparation and the method and means of presenting the information should be carefully considered.  A presentation concerns getting a message across to the listeners and may often contain a 'persuasive' element.
4. Creative CommonsCreative Commons is a nonprofit organization that allows the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. Creative Commons licenses are not an alternative to copyright. They work alongside copyright and enable you to modify your copyright terms to best suit your needs.

5. SlideshowA slide show may be a presentation of images purely for their own visual interest or artistic value, sometimes unaccompanied by description or text, or it may be used to clarify or reinforce information, ideas, comments, solutions or suggestions which are presented verbally. Slide shows are sometimes still conducted by a presenter using an apparatus such as a carousel slide projector or an overhead projector, but now the use of an electronic video display device and a computer running presentation software is typical.

I hope that your next week will be equal or more interesting than this week.
Bye-bye!

María Maestre Analyst week from 17 till 24 february mythology gods

a. What was the best part of the activity?

After making an interaction with my colleges into the group and comparing all the answers, all of us think that the best of this week has been the topic we have chosen “mythology gods”, because we love it. From our point of view the secret of a good presentation is “PASSION”, because if you do not love your work, it is better that you do any other thing,(if you can of course).
We like as well to make all the pictures and parts of the power point for the next Monday presentation.

b. What was the worse?

The worst of this activity it was to find images with CREATIVE COMMONS LICENCES (CCL) and to organize our work, because there was a lot of information. For that reason we decided to make our own pictures... Maybe, for that the worst has become the best...Because we have enjoyed and laughed while we were doing them.

c. What was the best moment of the week (in the work of the
group)?

When we were all agree choosing our topic and on Wednesday the nineteenth, we were working all together in our amazing activity, because all of us knew what to do in this work. Finally it was an enjoyable afternoon.

d. What was the worse?
..
The worst of the week was how to organize the activity because of the lack of time and all the work we have to do.
We were until late on Wednesday and Thursday as well, and we even needed some more time on Friday morning.

e. What have you learned?

The indispensable and essential to make useful power points, at the same time that we have learned that it is not easy to find CCL to work with them and been creative, that is why we decided to do it by ourselves.

f. What do you need to conserve -as a group- for the next weeks?

That we are a hard working group.

g. What do you need to improve –as a group- for the next weeks?

The organization, planning and compromises as well as the good interaction between some members of the group, although this week our relation and communication was better, we think that it could improve.

h. How THIS content is related to other contents in the course and in
your degree?

The CCL and the power point of this activity is not only useful but also indispensable; after, now and always in our career, and we should know perfectly its pros and cons.

i. There is any evident social connection of this content (news,
politics, etc.)?

Nowadays all the media such as TV, internet, etc need CCL to work legally.

Power point is part of our daily life not only in class, but also watching news, searching on the internet, etc.

3rd Week

Hello dear readers! It´s Cristina Gil here! How are you? I hope you are all doing great...
Well... this week we have been working on different things. First we had to do a Slideshow with 30 slides, 10 explaining what Creative Commons Licenses are and 20 explaining some tips of how to make a good presentation. In second place we have done a presentation about Greek Mythology and its relation with the seasons of the year. We have found this topic very interesting to explain... we hope you think the same!

Our roles this week have been:
  • Ana Cristina Artes: CURATOR-FARMER.
  • Rosa Mª Campillo and Cristina Fernández: JOURNALISTS.
  • Cristina Gil: FACILITATOR.
  • Mª José Gómez and Carmen González: STARS.
  • María Maestre: ANALYST.
  • Almudena Molina: TRANSLATOR.

Tuesday 18 February 2014

Hi! I am Ana Cristina and this week I am the translator of the group. This week, the five words are:
  • Meridian: one of the imaginary lines joining the north and south poles at right angles to the equator, designated by degrees of longitud from 0º at Greenwich to 180º.
  • Parallel: imaginary lines around the earth parallel to the equator, designated by degrees of latitude ranging from 0º at the equator to 90º at the poles.
  • Cartography: the art, technique or practice of complaining or drawing maps or charts.
  • Map projection: a means of representing or a representation of the globe or celestial sphere or part of it on a flat map, using a grid of lines of latitude and longitude.
  • Latitude: an angular distance in degrees north or south of the equator (latitude 0°), equal to the angle subtended at the centre of the globe by the meridian between the equator and the point in question.

Facilitator

Hello! My role as the facilitator of the group ends here. It has been a good experience because it is a way to assure that everything is being doing as best as possible. The worst of being the facilitator is that you have lot of responsibility.

I have seen improvements in the way that this group works; day after day we are more familiarized with the dynamic of this subject and with all the technologies that we are supposed to use. Anyway we still have to enhance our results.

Working as journalist

Hi bloggers! I'm Carmen and this week I've been one of the journalists of Hide & Seek.

Last Monday was the day of the works expositions so all the members of the different groups and specially the stars where so nervous. Linda told us to divide in different groups and to put in common the information we collected and expose it to the rest of the class.

The first group was composed by the stars of every group and they had to explain the three different types of porjections: Robinson, Mercator and Azimuthal.

The second one was composed by the facilitators and journalists and we had to define what a “Treasure hunt” is and to explain quickly every group's treasure hunt.

The third one was integrated by the analysts and they talked about distortions in media.

The fourth group was composed by the translators.

And, finally, the group five was integrated by the curator-farmers.

MY EXPERIENCE AS STAR.

Dear bloggers!

This week I have been the star of my group. I think that it have been interesting because in the exposition of this practique we have organized in roles groups and each group should told us the different part of the work: Treasure hunt, distortion in media, cartographic projections... At the beginning to do this activity was a bit difficult but a few minutes after, we could organize without problems with members of other group  and I think that the result of the expositions were fine.
With the use of this new exposure method we have seen the perspective and opinion of other groups. It help us to learn about tools used by our partners in their exposure.
The class of today shows that we can work so well together if we put interest.

“Your actions speak louder than words”
- Danielle Cater.

Being the analyst of this second practice

Hello! I am María José Gómez Gracia and this week I am the analyst, the responsible to say the best and worst things in the whole week. In addition, I have to qualify different aspects of the group.

Projections

 1. What was the best part of the activity? The best part of this activity was to discover that the maps have distortions, which means that the dimension of many countries is not the same that in the reality (some are bigger than other or vice versa). It is too interesting and a lot of people unknown that.

2. What was the worse? The worst part was researching information, because some questions that we had to answer were very difficult to find. As a result of that, we had to do a big effort researching information on the internet but finally, we could resolve these problems.

 3. What was the best moment of the week (in the work of the group)? The best moment was when we met after class last Thursday (13th February) to continue working. That day we discovered a lot of interesting things and the whole group cooperated in the best way.

 4. What was the worse? The worst day was when we started working in class, we couldn´t do anything with the computer because the internet didn´t work well. This made that we couldn´t advance in class.

 5. What have you learnt?  We have learnt that all the different maps have distortions and it must be known by all the people. Mercator´s projection is the most useful but it has a lot of mistakes. Robinson´s projection is balanced but it has poles distortions. The worst of Azimuthal’s projection is that you can see both hemispheres at once.

 6. What do you need to conserve -as a group- for the next weeks? We are a hard-working group and I think that each week we are making an effort to improve. Day by day we are more motivated.

 7. What do you need to improve –as a group- for the next weeks? We must find a solution for the bad internet connection of our class because we lose lot of time there.

 8. How THIS content is related to other contents in the course and in your degree? The different maps help us to understand that what we teach is not always right and consequently, it supposes teaching “erroneous” things to our students.

 9. There is any evident social connection of this content (news, politics, etc.)? The different maps have a social relation to this content, for example, in politics, news, newspaper, in classroom, etc. In life, we usually find different versions of the reality. “All depends on the eye of the beholder” In classes of geography, the Mercator map is often used and many people don´t know that this type of map has lots of distortions. I think that when a teacher or a professor uses these types of maps, he must to inform to their class that these maps are wrong.

I HAVE LOVED BEING A STAR!!

Hello dear readers! It´s me again :)
Well... this week I have been... a STAR!!! I was so nervous with the role I had this week, because this week´s task was a bit difficult. A star has to show all the class all the work we have done during the week. We only have 6 minutes so it is hard because you have to explain all the information you have found and all the work you have done.
When we arrived to class our teacher Linda said to us that it was going to be different... all the stars were going to do a ten minute presentation together!!! At the start I did not understand this point very well but when we started working on it I noticed that we were doing team work, which I think is something all teachers have to do during their lives. It was great because in just 40 minutes or so we all got well organized and in my opinnion we did a very good job! And it was the first time for us to do something like this... it was like solving a problem we were not expecting.
I am so happy I have been one of the stars this week, because we did something different, something unique... I actually loved it! in only a few minutes we discused a little bit and organized the presentation. Every single one of us (stars) said at least one phrase for example I explained that the Mercator Projection is the most used when teaching and that this is wrong because it the one that has the most distorsions. I really think that is proper team work.

So... I just wanted to say to the next stars that it is a good experience and that you learn quite a lot so... go ahead and do your best! :D
See you next week bloggers!

Cristina Gil Gargan A.K.A. Criss
Hello everybody,

Here I am again to explain that last friday we were at LUIS VIVES again working from 9:30 in the morning.
We compared SWEDEN and EGYPT , because even Sweden has 445,000Km2 and Egypt 1000,000, Sweden appears bigger than Egypt.
That was unthoughtable from my point of wiev, because we are in the 21st century, and with all the technology we have nowadays, I couldn´t imagine that this error could happended!!

GOOD NIGHT!!

MARÍA MAESTRE
Thursday13th2014

Hello collegues!!:

Today we have reserved a classroom in “LUIS VIVES”, because this morning, in classroom 0.1,

we had not got internet access,

We are working in the “TREASURE HUNT”.

We are a group of 8 people.

We have made 4 groups inside the 8 people group.

Each one have choosen one of the maps projection, ROBINSON, MERCATOR and

AZIMUTHAL, and two of us are the journalist and we are describing what we are doing.

Each group is connected to the internet and researching one part of the job.

The two girls who are working with ROBINSON, have told me that the internet research is really

hard, because the topic is difficult to understand, due to you need Geographical knowledge.

The two girls of MERCATOR said that is one of the worst maps projection, but it is often used in

books because of its rectangular shape.

The other two girls who are in AZIMUTHAL said that it is very difficult to find information,

because there are just a few one about AZIMUTHAL.

The maps in azimuthal are round.

Cartographic Projections

Dear bloggers, I' m going to upload our work of this week about Cartographic projections.

  1. Cartographic Projections
- ROBINSON.

1.       Purpose:

Its primary purpose is to create visually appealing maps of the entire world. It is a compromise projection; it does not eliminate any type of distortion, but it keeps the levels of all types of distortion relatively low over most of the map.

2.       Distortion – Types?
There are different types of distorsion. We can found:

·         Shearing and Conformality.
Robinson projection is not conformal; shapes are distorted more than they would be in a truly conformal projection. However, shapes are not distorted very badly within about 45° north or south of the equator or within about 45° of the map's central meridian. Beyond these limits, shape distortion can be quite severe.
·         Tearing
Robinson maps show lines of latitude as parallel straight lines and lines of longitude as nonparallel lines that become increasingly curved as you move farther away from the map's central meridian. The poles are shown as straight lines and the east and west edges of the map are curved lines 180° from the map's central meridian.
·         Compression:
Robinson projections are not equivalent; they do suffer from compression. However, the amount of area distortion is generally low within about 45° of the equator.
·         Equidistance:
The Robinson projection is not equidistant; there is no point or points from which all distances are shown accurate
·         Azimuthality:
The Robinson projection is not azimuthal; there is no point or points from which all directions are shown accurately.

3.       Distortion – Areas that are most distorted?
The greatest distortion occurs near the north and south poles. The range of acceptable distortion in these maps is usually 45 degrees north to south.

4.       There is more than one version?
No, is unique.

5.       Problems?
This kind of projection isn’t equivalent so it avoids these properties.
Distortion close to the poles is severe, but quickly declines to moderate levels moving away from them. The straight parallels imply severe angular distortion at the high latitudes toward the outer edges of the map, a fault inherent in any pseudocylindrical projection.

    6. Socio-Cultural Implications of using it as a learning resource?

This type of projection usually uses because makes the world “look right”. Better balance of size and shape of high-latitude lands than other projections.

- MERCATOR

1. Purpose:

The Mercator projection was developed in 1569 by Gerardus Mercator as a navigation tool. Like the Peters map, the grid is rectangular and lines of latitude and logitude are all parallel. The Mercator map was designed as an aid to navigators since straight lines on the Mercator projection are loxodromes or rhumb lines -- representing lines of constant compass bearing -- perfect for "true" direction. If a navigator wishes to sail from Spain to the West Indies, all they have to do is draw a line between the two points and the navigator knows which compass direction to continually sail to reach their destination.
 2. Distortion – Types?

The Mercator Projection always has the Equator as its Standard Parrallel.  Its construction is such that the lines of longitude and latitude are at right angles to each other – this means that a world map is always a rectangle.
Also, the lines of longitude are evenly spaced apart.  But the distance between the lines of latitude increase away from the Equator.  This relationship is what allows the direction between any two points on the map to be constant true direction.
While this relationship between lines of lines of latitude and longitude correctly maintains direction, it allows for distortion to occur to areas, shapes and distances.  Nearest the Equator there is little distortion.  Distances along the Equator are always correct, but nowhere else on the map.  Between about 15° north and south the areas and shapes are well preserved.  Further out (to about 50° north and south) the areas and shapes are reasonably well preserved.  This is why, for uses other than marine navigation, the Mercator projection is recommended for use in the Equatorial region only.
Despite these distortions the Mercator projection is generally regarded as being a conformal projection.  This is because within small areas shapes are essentially this.

3. Distortion – Areas that are most distorted?

·         Europe (9,7 millions of Km2) appears bigger than South America (17,8 millions of km2).
·         The URSS (22,4 millions of km2) appears bigger than Africa (30 millions of km2).
·         The Ecuador doesn´t appear in the center of the map. Two thirds of the map represent the North hemisphere, a third to the South hemisphere.
·         Scandinavia (1,1 millions of km2) is represented bigger than India (3,3 millions of km2).
·         Greenland (2,1 millions of km2) appears bigger than China (9,5 millions of km2).
·         The eurocentral distortion is kept if we compare concrete countries: Italy has equal size that Somalia (the latter is twice major); Sweden turns out to be twice major that Egypt, when it is the other way around.

4. There is more than one version?

No. There is only one versio

 5.  Problems?

The problem is that Mercator does not respect the real size of the continents, making Europe and North America bigger than others.

6.  Socio-Cultural Implications of using it as a learning resource?

It is one of the most used in books and when teaching children because of its rectangular shape. This way children can see all the countries properly. But there are massive distortions. Europe for example appears bigger than other continents when it is not really like this. This is due to the importance Europe has always had. It is considered the most important continent in the world that´s why Mercator did this.

- AZIMUTHAL

1.       Purpose
It is the best one for projecting small scale maps.

2.       Distortion – Types?
It has radial symmetry in the scales and hence in the distortions: map distances from the central point are computed by a function r(d) of the true distance d, independent of the angle; correspondingly, circles with the central point as center are mapped into circles which have as center the central point on the map.

3.       Distortion – Areas that are most distorted?
It depends on where the center is fixed. As you go to the edges it is more distorted.
4.       There is more than one version?
               Yes.
5.       Problems?
You cannot see the whole world at once; it is only useful for one hemisphere.
6.       Socio-Cultural Implications of using it as a learning resource?
These maps are useful for navigation.

2.       COMPARISON BETWEEN MAPS.

First, is important that you know that we have chosen Egypt and Sweden to do the comparison between the different projections, and in the reality, Egypt is bigger than Sweden.
In the Robinson projection we saw that both countries look quite similar in size. In this projection as in the azimuthal projection, Egypt is on the northern hemisphere.
In Mercator projection, Sweden is bigger than Egypt although Egypt has got more km2 than Sweden in the reality.
Egypt is closer to the Equator line in this projection.
More importance is given to Sweden than Egypt because this projection was made for sailing giving more importance to colonist countries.
In the Azimuthal Projection the difference in size between these two countries is the clearest of the 3 types of projection.
Egypt is on the northern hemisphere as in Robinson projection.

1 3. WHAT COULD BE THE BEST PROJECTION FOR BEING USED IN A CLASSROOM?
In our case, there wasn’t any type of discussion with this theme because we were agree with the best cartographic was Robinson projection because at school we only focus in countries, not in pols and this projection only has got a distortion in pols and his shape is adequate to have a learn easily.

4. SEARCH ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF ONE SPECIFIC MEDIA:
We have chosen an example of media, the shape of heart.
Everybody know that the real form of heart isn´t this <3 but we usually use it to draw o to represent the love. In some games, the heart appears in the center of the body instead of the left part. This can produce a distortion in the vision of the little students.
A way to finish with it, maybe will be teacher teach children since they were very little to draw the heart with its real shape and represent the different feelings with it.

5. TREASURE HUNT

A treasure hunt is one of many different types of games which can have one or more players who try to find hidden articles, locations or places by using a series of clues.
In our animals treasure hunt you should follow next directions:
  • -          You should change the message next to the pig if necessary.
  • -           Print and cut along the horizontal lines.
  • -           Fold each clue in half so only the animal is showing.
  • -          Put tape or sticky tack on the clue side and place clues all around the house so the animals are showing.
  • -          Give this first clue to the team.  Children read each clue and search to find the matching animal.
We have all of this work in our presentation.

I’m going to include the complete treasure hunt to play with our futures students.
I’m sure that it will be so funny! (:
